Portrait in production
The short version
Umar is a UK chartered accountant and Managing Partner of Jack Ross Chartered Accountants, a long-established practice in Manchester. He is not commenting on AI from the sidelines: he works inside a live practice, with real clients, real deadlines and real accounts that have to be right. He has been writing about automation and the profession since 2016, and about AI in finance since early 2023, before the hype cycle caught up.
His interest is practical rather than theoretical: better accounts, better evidence, better decisions and better training. He believes AI should raise standards, not lower accountability, and he writes for SME owners, accountants, finance professionals and the wider business community.
Why I write
I write because accountancy is entering a period of real change. AI will make some work faster. It will make some work cheaper. It will also expose weak judgement, poor systems and shallow review.
The opportunity is not to replace the accountant. The opportunity is to build a better one.
Infinite Accountant
Umar is also developing Infinite Accountant, an evidence-led approach to AI-assisted accounts review, designed around a simple principle: AI can surface the evidence, but the partner still signs.
